Helen Sterling Clarke

FAMILY LAWYER AND MEDIATOR – B.A, J.D, L.L.B.

Helen is the founder and managing partner of Sterling Law.  She was called to the bar in 1992 and has practised, primarily in all areas of Family Law and in Estates Law since then.

She is a graduate of Queen’s University in Ontario and the University of Notre Dame in the United States. Helen has a diverse clientele, both ethnically and geographically, she is a Barrister, Solicitor and Attorney who understands the necessity for many to resolve their disputes through negotiations, mediation and collaborative processes.

The results of legal representation have tremendous, often life changing impact on families and the individuals within them, Helen blends two very different aspects of herself into her practice.  On one hand, she is tough:  Very pleasant, but no nonsense. She uses practical solutions to persuade opposing parties; she uses natural business ability to bring about best results; she represents you in creative and strategic ways that deliver optimum results.  On the other hand, Helen is approachable and compassionate… and she listens to you.

Helen has advised on the full range of custody, access, support and property issues.  She has extensive family law experience, including property removal and child abduction inter-provincially and internationally, complex custody and access matters and high-conflict cases.

In Estate matters, Helen typically probates wills. She also represents individuals in contesting and defending wills and powers of attorneys at court, in negotiation and in mediation.

A skilled mediator since 1998, Helen understands that while it is often better to mediate or negotiate a solution to your family or estates issue, sometimes those avenues are unavailable or quite simply, for various reasons, litigating in court is more appropriate.  Suffice it to say, her colleagues then know her to be a spirited and tireless opponent.

Helen appears regularly in the Ontario Court of Justice and Superior Court of Justice and represents clients in all preparations, including case and settlement conferences, application hearings, motions and trials.

Helen has a longstanding interest in local and international community development and youth-focused initiatives. She is a member of the Peel Law Association, the Ontario Association of Family Mediators, and the Law Society of Ontario

So while she has the whole tool kit, Helen is able to deliver the most practical and efficient solutions to your legal challenges. Whether you proceed by negotiations or litigation, she believes in teamwork and will ensure that your needs remain at the centre of our family law practice.

Helen enjoys reading history, community development, travelling and spending time with family in her spare time.
